Formed in 2012 and covering South Leicestershire and North Northamptonshire, Bowden Consulting Engineers is a Consulting Structural and Civil Engineering Practice providing practical structural services for architects, builders and developers to create innovative solutions for building challenges.

As structural engineers, our work consists of new building work, for both commercial and industrial sectors. We also undertake structural designs for alterations and extensions to private homes and appraisals for existing building conservation. Overall our aim is to create a functional and inventive structural engineering solution, which supported by a personal, professional service, enables our clients to achieve their objectives.

Our aim is to embrace the architectural concept and remain sympathetic to the original design, whilst incorporating innovation and balancing commercial viability or budget restraints.

Our Services

Retaining Wall

Integral to a building or stand-alone, retaining wall schemes are required wherever there is a change of ground level and ensures that this change in level across a building or plot is stabilised. This also includes earth retention schemes.

Drainage Scheme

Drainage Schemes cover the control of both surface and foul water. Schemes require liaison with the relevant water authorities and, upon completion, handover to the local authority. Drainage schemes are designed and built to unique requirements and specifications.

Feasibility Schemes

Bowden Consulting Engineers enjoy working closely alongside architects from the outset of a project in order to assist with the development of a scheme. Projects include; structural outlines, feasibility advisor to the architect and the sizing of structural members.

Scaffolding Design

With 7 years’ experience as a temporary works engineer, we understand fully that working to meet the client’s needs is key to ensuring that costs, disruption and length of hire are kept to a minimum.

Steel Beam Design

Small one-off modifications of houses are usually completed with a ‘Building Notice’ and often involve steel beam works. Normally involving a site visit, key dimensions are taken to allow the steel beam calculations to be undertaken.

Structural Survey

It is recommended that a Home Buyers Report is obtained by the purchaser of a property and sometimes concerns regarding structural issues are raised by the surveyor. We can attend site and inspect these issues, making the necessary recommendations in a Structural Report.

Civil Engineering Schemes

Schemes, including infrastructure planning and draining works, must adhere to the same criteria as regular building schemes. We advise on underpinning for stability, scaffolding designs, works on major and minor drainage schemes and retaining wall design.

Building Regulations

All structural works require sign off and building regulation certification, which includes structural calculation and build details to be submitted to the Building Control Authority. These calculations are checked, and adherence verified as the build progresses.

Gary Pedler

Gary set up Bowden Consulting Engineers in 2012 having spent his career in the construction industry, latterly as a Project Manager for an international heavy lift civil engineering contractor, responsible for operational projects around the globe.

Bowden Consulting Engineers was created to enable him to spend more time at home and also to meet the perceived need for providing structural engineering services for the growing domestic market. In particular it assists home-owners who love living in the Market Harborough area but require more space

The aim of the practice is to offer practical and economical structural services to local Architects, Builders and Developers, primarily providing support to the domestic sector.

This support includes loft conversions to provide additional bedrooms, new garden rooms with bi-fold door openings to bring the outside in and enabling the removal of a load bearing wall between the kitchen and the dining room. More recently the practice has been involved in works to enable more convenient home working.

With over 30 years of experience, Gary will bring an innovative approach to any project, providing creative solutions to the most challenging structural engineering tasks.
